The Enteric Fermentation R&D Accelerator has officially launched its Research Strategy, marking a significant step forward in addressing methane emissions from livestock. Backed by Quadrature Climate Foundation (QCF), this $200 million initiative aims to accelerate solutions to reduce methane emissions from enteric fermentation—a process responsible for about 30% of global methane emissions, equivalent to emissions from the fossil fuel industry.

Enteric fermentation, a digestive process in ruminants like cows, produces methane as a by-product, released into the atmosphere when the animals burp. This methane is a potent greenhouse gas, with a global warming potential 86 times greater than CO2 over a 20-year period. Addressing methane emissions from livestock is critical to mitigating climate change.

The Accelerator is already making headway in several key research areas, including the development of low-cost measurement tools, microbiome characterisation, low-methane genetics, and vaccines. With its comprehensive strategy in place, the Accelerator will expand its efforts to support projects across various stages of readiness, driving further innovation in livestock methane mitigation.
